Alicia Keys: We need to love ourselves
Queen of R'n'B Alicia Keys believes if everyone loved what they saw in the mirror, they'd be in a much happier place.
The 33-year-old singer certainly has no qualms when it comes to confidence, as she regularly performs on stage in front of thousands and was recently declared the face of Givenchy's Dahlia Divin fragrance – which required her to pose in a gold strapless dress for the campaign's photoshoot.
Alicia puts her confidence down to her upbringing. Speaking to the British edition of Cosmopolitan in its November issue, she said: "I grew up around women with different styles and they were never self-conscious – so I was never self-conscious myself. As an adult and mother, I've learnt you have to be so careful about what you say around your kids because they pick up stuff so much.
"If we could just diversify a little bit and love our own reflection more, we'd be in a much better place."
But despite being comfortable in her own skin, Keys still looks to other females as beauty icons when determining her style and appearance.
Her iconic choices vary from women in positions of power who make a positive difference to the world, to girls walking along the street, embracing their natural self and feeling free.
Keys says whether you're open or shy, nothing should hold you back.
Alongside her wise words, scientific studies have been conducted to support the idea that loving yourself leads to greater satisfaction with life.
One study carried out by researchers at the University of Texas found that those who have higher levels of self-compassion are less likely to develop anxiety or depression than those with lower levels.
